Letter from the Trustees
If not here and now…then when?
As we start to exit from the Covid lockdown, our beautiful town and valley will, more than ever before, need forward thinking and generous giving. Our town needs to reinvent itself and emerge fitter and stronger, both as a community and a destination. We are launching the Sidmouth Trust to ensure that we can help make those things happen.
Sidmouth has an incredible legacy of generosity and in the past, many towns, just like Sidmouth, have evolved because of private spending. Colonel Balfour gave Sidmouth its first water system, the Unitarians gave Sidmouth the Byes. People and organisations have always given back to the town that they love. The Keith Owen Fund alone is well known around the country as one man’s gift to the “perfect English town”. But one legacy, however generous, is never going to be enough. And whilst few have the ability to bestow such very large sums on a town, everyone has the ability to give something back, whether it is time, ideas or money.
The anticipated financial implications of the Covid pandemic also mean that with a long period of serious uncertainty ahead of us, the funding of local communities, either through direct income or government funding, will be drastically reduced. We need to stand on our own two feet.
In essence the Sidmouth Trust is a fund-raising charity that aims to assist and support ideas and initiatives inside Sidmouth and the Sid Valley.
It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, whether you were born here, retired here, came to work or have been a regular visitor, your generosity and your ideas could be vital to help us develop and evolve Sidmouth as a place in which to live, work and play, for years to come.
The Trust will invite bequests, regular givers and fundraisers to donate to the fund and the capital and income from those fundraising activities will be used to support a wide variety of initiatives and projects that will help make Sidmouth a thriving town both now and for future generations. Just some of those projects and initiatives are outlined on our website.
We want to harness the sense of belonging and loyalty to our Sidmouth community, – to create a town ‘alumni’. More than just benefactors and supporters, we hope the Trust will be able to support active community groups that can really make things happen whether for schools and sports facilities, natural spaces, transport and leisure, tourism and culture. We want current generations, and those yet to come, to support the Sidmouth Trust to foster a similar spirit of loyalty and help promote the greater welfare of our town and valley.
Help us to “preserve the past and shape the future”. And, by building a model to help fund a better future for our town and valley, maybe others will see that they need to create a generation of town and city trusts throughout the country.
Make it now, make it here, make it happen!”
